Introduce your students to a real-life heroine who led 300 people out of slavery, served the Union army during the Civil War, and was a prominent voice in the push for women's voting rights. Harriet Tubman was born a slave around 1820, but from her time as a child, she knew that she had to be free. After several attempts, she finally succeeded in escaping to the North - and that's just the beginning of a truly inspirational and adventurous story. Her work with the Underground Railroad is only part of the story. She also worked as a nurse and a spy for the Union army before becoming a speaker on equal rights. Featuring lots of music and action, Tubman is a great introduction to a historical figure willing to risk everything in defense of freedom.
